The Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, has called for stakeholder collaboration as Ghana intensifies preparations for the 2027 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27).
Speaking at Ghana’s Second National Preparatory Meeting, held at the NCA Tower in Accra from March 31 to April 2, 2026, Rev. Ing. Fianko noted that the radio frequency spectrum underpins modern life, powering mobile communications, broadband connectivity, broadcasting, satellite services, aviation, maritime operations, and scientific research.
He noted that the finite nature of spectrum resources demands efficient, equitable, and interference-free use, achievable only through coordinated global management under the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The Deputy Director of the Engineering Division, Mrs Naa Amorkor Asihene, explained the WRC cycle, the role of the African Telecommunication Union (ATU), and key agenda areas, emphasising that the conference plays a role in ensuring efficient spectrum use while promoting global harmonisation, economies of scale, and equipment interoperability.
Mrs Asihene emphasised that the outcomes of Ghana’s preparatory meetings would shape the country’s contributions at the ECOWAS and ATU levels and urged participants to engage actively, noting that their input would strengthen Ghana’s positions on critical agenda items.
The three-day meeting would focus on Fixed-Satellite Services, Broadcasting-Satellite Services, Mobile and Radiolocation Services, Mobile-Satellite Services, Science Services, and Article 22 of the ITU Radio Regulations.
Held every three to four years, the World Radiocommunication Conference serves as the principal global forum for reviewing and revising the Radio Regulations, the international treaty governing spectrum use and satellite orbits.
