Military Promotions, National Honors Announced for Helicopter Crash Victims
August 15, 2025 Top Stories / Defence 0 CommentPresident John Dramani Mahama has approved posthumous promotions for the three military personnel who died in Wednesday’s helicopter crash, while civilian victims will receive recognition at the next National Honors Ceremony.
The President made the announcement during Friday’s state funeral at Independence Square, describing posthumous promotions as the highest mark of respect for duty performed even unto death. Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala has been promoted to the rank of Wing Commander, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu to Flight Lieutenant, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah to Flight Sergeant.
President Mahama emphasized that these are not merely symbolic gestures but represent the rightful place these officers have earned in the Republic’s role of honor. The benefits due to their families will be reflected in the new ranks, providing practical support beyond the recognition. The Chief of the Defense Staff will oversee the ceremonial presentation of the posthumous promotion insignias to the families.
The five civilian victims, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, will be posthumously recognized at the next National Honors Ceremony.
The helicopter crash occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region while the victims were traveling to an event in Obuasi. The tragedy prompted an outpouring of international solidarity, with heads of state from across Africa and West Africa sending condolences and messages of support.
President Mahama expressed gratitude to the international leaders who either visited Ghana, made personal calls, or sent messages of condolence on behalf of their people. The diplomatic corps also participated actively in the mourning process, joining Ghanaians in paying respects to the fallen officials and military personnel.
The President thanked the bereaved families for their courage and dignity in facing this unimaginable loss, while also acknowledging the Ghana Armed Forces and Emergency Services for their swift and professional response to the accident.
Religious leaders, traditional authorities, civil society, and citizens received recognition for their prayers, comfort to families, and various forms of support during the darkest days of the tragedy.
President Mahama said promotions in the armed forces are never given lightly, making the posthumous honors a fitting tribute to officers who served their country with dedication.
The recognition extends Ghana’s tradition of honoring those who make the ultimate sacrifice while serving the nation.
The international solidarity demonstrated during this period, according to the President, affirms the strength of Ghana’s national and international relationships, showing how tragedy can bring communities and nations together in support of those who grieve.
