Maphlix Farms, located at Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region, is set to supply 3,000 tonnes of tomatoes to the Ghanaian market, as the country responds to a shortfall following Burkina Faso’s ban on tomato exports.
The plan was disclosed during a working visit by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr Eric Opoku, as part of efforts to engage private sector producers to reduce reliance on imports.
The Minister commended the farm’s use of modern production methods, including irrigation systems, nursery operations and expanded open-field cultivation. He said these measures are expected to raise output and support a steady supply of tomatoes.
Harvesting of the tomatoes has already begun, with produce being picked every three days. This is expected to improve availability on the market and help ease price pressures.
Mr Opoku assured the public that steps are being taken to maintain adequate supply. He urged consumers and traders to remain calm, and pointed to ongoing collaboration with research institutions to develop improved seed varieties that can withstand changing weather conditions and last longer after harvest.
