Interior Minister Commissions four patrol boats to boost Marine Security

The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has commissioned four new patrol boats for the Marine Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service in Tema to strengthen the unit’s operational capacity and enhance maritime security along Ghana’s coastline.

The newly commissioned vessels are expected to significantly improve efforts against human and drug trafficking, illegal fishing, and other transnational crimes. They will provide the Marine Police with greater speed, mobility, and reach across Ghana’s territorial waters.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, the Minister emphasized the importance of the blue economy in Ghana’s national development strategy, highlighting on its potential to drive sustainable economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty.

“The Ghana Marine Police Unit plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order in our maritime domain, preventing piracy, and protecting our marine resources. These new patrol boats will undoubtedly enhance the unit’s operational capacity, enabling them to effectively patrol our waters, respond to emergencies, and prevent maritime crimes,” he said.

He explained that the patrol boats will be deployed for surveillance, patrols, and rescue operations, enabling Marine Police personnel to respond swiftly to distress calls, combat smuggling, deter piracy, and safeguard the country’s marine resources.

Mr. Muntaka assured the public that the Ministry of Interior and the Government remain committed to maintaining peace and security nationwide, and will continue working tirelessly to ensure a safe environment for all citizens.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, added that the vessels will increase visibility, enhance coastal patrols, and improve response times, thereby ensuring the safety of coastal communities and protecting livelihoods.

“Your dedication and professionalism are crucial to our success. May these patrol boats serve us well in our quest for maritime security and prosperity,” he stated.
