The newly appointed Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Service, Dr Robert Amesiya, has commended the 37 Military Hospital for its quality healthcare delivery while drawing attention to persistent challenges facing the health sector.
During the visit on Wednesday, Dr Amesiya praised the hospital for its role in providing care during national disasters and for recording low maternal deaths in recent years, expressing optimism that such standards would be maintained.
He, however, noted difficulties in patient transportation and weak communication channels as major obstacles to effective healthcare delivery.
Speaking on behalf of the Commander of the hospital, Brigadier General Evelyn Vivian Abraham-Kwabiah, the Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Brig Gen Richard Naab, said the hospital has strengthened its systems to meet the growing patient population.
He disclosed plans to establish a Quality Management Department to improve client satisfaction and reduce potential legal disputes.
Brigadier Gen Naab also pointed to constraints including limited bed capacity at the Intensive Care Unit, inadequate space at the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit, and insufficient operating theatres. Other senior medical officers and surgeons mentioned challenges including shortages of ambulances, miscommunication during referrals, lack of policy documents, inadequate scholarships, training and capacity building gaps, and the recurring “no bed” crisis caused by limited space and logistics.
