Government to Establish a Shelter Shop for Domestic Violence Victims – Gender Minister

The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has disclosed the government’s plan to establish a One-Stop Shop Shelter for victims of domestic violence.

She revealed this on Tuesday when World Vision Ghana, under the leadership of its National Director, Tinah Mukunda, paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry in Accra.

She said the innovative facility will be a haven of hope, offering shelter, counselling, legal aid, medical services, and social support under one roof. Noting that the initiative exemplifies the government’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence comprehensively.

Adding that the facility will provide temporary safe accommodation, psychosocial counselling, legal aid, medical care, and referral services while also responding to broader social welfare needs.

Dr Naa Momo reaffirmed the government’s focus on economic inclusion and social protection, noting the passage of the Social Protection Act, which provides a framework to coordinate interventions.

The Minister commended World Vision Ghana for its continuous support to the Ministry in diverse areas and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening child protection systems.

She added that in collaboration with the Attorney General’s Department, work has advanced on the review of the Children’s (Amendment) Bill and the Justice for Children Bill, aimed at strengthening legal protection for children. particularly in times of crisis.

The National Director of World Vision Ghana, Tinah Mukunda, introduced its operations and explored areas of collaboration with the ministry and invited the Minister to the launch of World Vision Ghana’s Five-Year National Strategy (2026-2030).

She commended the government’s initiatives to improve the lives of vulnerable populations, particularly children and women.

She highlighted the organisation’s focus on child-centred development, community empowerment, education support, economic strengthening, and advocacy, as well as its ongoing campaigns on violence against women and children.
