Government Reactivates Media Development Fund

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the reactivation of the Media Development Fund to support capacity-building, welfare, investigative journalism, digital literacy, and safety training for journalists.

This fund will ensure that Journalists can work confidently, competently and securely.

He made this known at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Saturday.

“The Fund will support capacity-building, welfare, investigative journalism, digital literacy, and safety training, ensuring that journalists can work confidently, competently, and securely,” he stated.

The President disclosed that the reactivation followed extensive consultation with stakeholders in the media industry.

President Mahama also announced that the next presidential media interaction will take place next year to commemorate the first anniversary of his administration.

He held an interactive session with the media on September 10, 2024, marking the beginning of a series of regular dialogues between the Presidency and the media fraternity.

The President reassured journalists that government is committed to press freedom and the protection of journalists, stating that his administration will neither sanction nor tolerate any form of intimidation, interference, or attack on journalists.

He noted that Ghana’s press freedom ranking has declined in recent years, with the 2025 Press Freedom Index reflecting conditions of 2024 recording another drop.

“Ghana faces a defining choice: to accept this gradual slide or to consciously reclaim our place as Africa’s torchbearer of media freedom. My administration has chosen the latter,” President Mahama declared.

The event, themed “Safeguarding Ghana’s Future: The Role of the Media in Promoting Peace, Security and the Fight Against Galamsey,” was attended by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Ministers of State, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and distinguished media practitioners.
