Government Committed to Strengthening Social Protection Systems

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has affirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening social protection systems.

The Minister highlighted the impact of programmes such as the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty, noting that the Government has expanded beneficiary households from 350,000 to 400,000 to reach more vulnerable populations.

She said this on Monday when the World Bank’s Social Policy Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, Mr Robert S. Chase, paid a courtesy call to her office in Accra.

She emphasised the need for stronger partnerships, including private-sector involvement, and assured that measures are in place to ensure a smooth transition for beneficiaries exiting social intervention programmes.

Dr Naa Momo Lartey stated that key legislative progress, which includes the Social Protection Act and the Affirmative Action Act, would strengthen coordination within the sector.

The meeting focused on advancing cooperation between the Government and the World Bank, particularly in implementing key interventions under the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project 2, including the LEAP cash transfer and technical support to the Ghana School Feeding Programme, among other social protection initiatives.

The World Bank’s Social Policy Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, Mr Robert S. Chase, affirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s efforts, particularly in directing resources to improve the lives of vulnerable groups.
