Government Committed to Protecting Fishers on Ghana’s Territorial Waters

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mrs Emelia Arthur, has assured fishers in Senya Beraku of the government’s commitment to protecting them and securing Ghana’s territorial waters after the robbery attack at sea.

Speaking at a brief ceremony on Tuesday in the Central Region, she announced a directive from the President to donate seven 40-horsepower outboard motors to support the victims.

She disclosed that six of the motors will replace those stolen during the attack, while one will be for rescue and emergency response operations within the fishing community.

Mrs Arthur said the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146) has strengthened enforcement, monitoring and safety measures in the sector.

She added that the government was implementing improved registration and licensing of fishing canoes, introducing GPS tracking and long-range communication systems for artisanal vessels, and rolling out insurance and pension schemes for fishers.

She noted that naval patrols are being enhanced to improve surveillance, deterrence and rapid response at sea.

The Member of Parliament for Awutu-Senya West, Gizella Akushika Tetteh-Agbotui, thanked the President for responding to the needs of her constituents, adding that the government has remained in contact with the affected fishers since the incident and assured them of continued support.

She announced that premix fuel would be supplied to enable the beneficiaries to resume fishing immediately.

The attack left several Ghanaian fishers assaulted and dispossessed of their outboard motors and other valuables, disrupting fishing activities and affecting the livelihoods of their families.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture said it will continue efforts to safeguard the fisheries sector, citing its contribution to food supply, employment and the stability of coastal communities.
