Ghana Tuna Industry secures Marine Stewardship Council Certification

Ghana’s tuna industry has secured certification from the Marine Stewardship Council(MSC), an international standard for sustainable fishing.

The announcement was made on Tuesday during a meeting between the Ghana Tuna Association and the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mrs Emelia Arthur, in Accra.

The Minister said the certification affirms Ghana’s adherence to responsible fisheries management and enhances the industry’s standing in the global seafood market.

She noted that the MSC certification is granted to fisheries that meet science-based requirements on stock management, environmental protection and governance.

She said the outcome reflects years of collaboration among industry operators, regulators and technical partners. These efforts included stronger data collection systems, expanded observer coverage, improved management of Fish Aggregating Devices and tighter monitoring and compliance measures.

She commended the Ghana Tuna Association and Pioneer Food Cannery for leading the certification process.

The Executive Director of the Fisheries Commission, Professor Benjamin Campion, said the certification will improve access to international markets as consumers increasingly demand sustainably sourced seafood.

He called on the media and the public to promote responsible fishing and discourage unsustainable practices.
