Ghana Navy and NPA Strengthen Collaboration to Fight Maritime Crime

The Security and Internal Coordinator of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Alhaji Haruna Kamel, has called for closer and more effective collaboration between the NPA and the Ghana Navy to address illegal bunkering and other fuel-related crimes, which continue to pose serious risks to national security and the petroleum downstream sector.

He made this call when he visited the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, as part of efforts to deepen cooperation in tackling growing security threats within Ghana’s maritime domain on Tuesday, in Accra.

Discussions between the two sides focused on strengthening joint efforts to confront a range of maritime security challenges, including illegal fishing, smuggling of goods, and other unlawful activities that undermine Ghana’s maritime economy and threaten its territorial integrity.

Rear Admiral Bessing welcomed the NPA’s initiative and reaffirmed the Ghana Navy’s full commitment to enhancing its partnership with the Authority.

He noted that sustained collaboration would improve maritime domain awareness and strengthen enforcement operations across Ghana’s waters.

Both parties agreed that enhanced inter-agency cooperation would significantly boost maritime security, deter criminal activities, and help curb illegal practices within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and territorial waters.
