Ghana and Toronto Celebrate Renaming of Yonge-Dundas Square to Sankofa Square

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority, joined Ghanaians in Canada and city officials in Toronto to celebrate the official opening of Sankofa Square.

The landmark square, formerly known as Yonge-Dundas Square, was renamed after a two-year consultation process led by Toronto’s Recognition Review Community Advisory Committee. The renaming coincided with the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition and also reflects efforts to confront historical injustices tied to Henry Dundas, the square’s former namesake, who was accused of delaying the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, described the renaming as a symbolic act of remembrance and justice.

She underscored the significance of Sankofa Square as a bold step towards healing for Africans both on the Continent and in the Diaspora.

“By choosing Sankofa, the City of Toronto affirms the importance of African heritage in the global struggle for freedom and justice, and acknowledges the centrality of memory in the journey towards liberation,” Madam Gomashie stated.

She highlighted the Government’s flagship cultural initiative, the Black Star Experience, which builds on earlier programmes such as PANAFEST, the Year of Return, and Beyond the Return.
“The Black Star Experience is a call for total cultural immersion, and Sankofa Square should become a living space of dialogue, cultural exchange, education, and empowerment,” she added.

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson, reiterated the interconnected histories of African and white diasporas, calling for unity in remembrance and healing.

He also announced the forthcoming Sankofa Freedom Movement Project, scheduled to launch in Toronto in 2026.

Mr. Quayson expressed appreciation to the Canadian Government, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, and City Councillor Chris Moise for their support and partnership.

The Toronto Mayor, Olivia Chow, speaking on behalf of the Canadian Government and alongside Councillor Chris Moise, reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting the Sankofa project while strengthening ties with Ghana.
