Ghana and Qatar Strengthen Labour Cooperation

The Government of Ghana is forging stronger ties with Qatar following a productive meeting with Her Excellency Sheikha Najwa bint Abdulrahman Al Thani, Undersecretary of the Qatar Ministry of Labour that will mark a major advancement in enhancing Ghana’s Labour Export Programme.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said this at Qatar on Monday during an official visit on the invitation of the Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.

He stated that, he is enthusiastic about Qatar’s readiness to recruit professionals from various sectors, including health, tourism, IT, and transport.

 “I am thrilled that Qatar has shown interest in our skilled workforce, this could open new avenues for employment for many Ghanaian”, he added.

According to the minister, both nations are on track to formalize labour cooperation agreements, with Qatar having ratified a key agreement, adding that Ghana’s Parliament is expected to follow suit in the coming weeks, further solidifying this partnership.

Additionally, Ghana has proposed the establishment of a West African Qatar Visa Centre to facilitate labour mobility. “Setting up this center would greatly enhance our collaborative efforts,” he noted.

He said Qatar has commended Ghanaian workers for their impressive work ethic and high standards as confirmed by many Qatari CEOs.

Mr. Ablakwa noted that, government remains committed to creating opportunities for Ghana’s youth both domestically and internationally through innovative and effective policies.
