The importance of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2019 (Act 989) was brought to the forefront during a Mother Tongue Programme organised by the Culture Unit of the Ga North Municipal Assembly at the Pokuase Church of Pentecost on Thursday, 26th February 2026. The sensitization programme, led by the RTI Officer of the Assembly, formed part of efforts to deepen public awareness of citizens’ constitutional right to access information and promote open governance within local communities.
The programme attracted school children from various schools within the Pokuase community, alongside teachers, headteachers, traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and officers and staff of the Assembly. Addressing participants, the RTI Officer explained the significance of the RTI Act in promoting transparency, accountability, and active citizen participation in governance. He emphasised that access to information empowers citizens to make informed decisions and encourages public institutions to remain accountable to the people they serve.

Particular attention was given to educating the younger participants on the relevance of the law, with the RTI Officer noting that children and students must be introduced early to their civic rights and responsibilities as future leaders of the nation. He further guided participants through the process of submitting RTI requests and outlined the support services available at the RTI Office to assist citizens in accessing information held by public institutions. According to him, the RTI Office remains committed to supporting the public in exercising their right to information with ease and confidence.
Participants actively engaged in the session by asking questions and sharing their views on access to information and citizen involvement in governance. The interaction created a better understanding of the role individuals and communities can play in promoting openness and accountability in public administration. The engagement also highlighted the continued commitment of the Ga North Municipal Assembly to using community-based programmes to expand awareness of the RTI Law and strengthen participatory governance at the local level.
