Foreign Affairs Ministry Launches Major Review to Align Ghana’s Foreign Policy

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has held a two-day stakeholders workshop on Ghana’s Comprehensive Foreign Policy aimed at aligning national priorities with emerging global dynamics.

Speaking at the workshop in Accra on Monday, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, stated that there is an essential immediate need for a unified foreign policy approach in a more complex global environment.

“The framework we build must protect our sovereignty, create jobs for Ghanaians, and this is shaped by trade, security, and communities abroad to uphold our voice on the global stage,” he added.

He noted that nations around the world were reorganising priorities, realigning alliances, and adapting to new global forces.

Mr James Quayson stated that in such a rapidly evolving international environment, Ghana “cannot afford silence, complacency, or ambiguity.”

He argued that the country must step forward “with clarity, with a cohesive strategy, and with confidence befitting a nation that has, time and again, proven itself a leader in Africa and a respected voice in the international community.”

On her part, the Acting Chief Director, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, emphasised the need to leverage pooled knowledge to boost Ghana’s diplomacy.

She outlined six emerging pillars which would inform the framework: economic diplomacy, strategic partnerships, security and defence cooperation, climate and environmental diplomacy, diaspora and cultural engagement, and a renewed commitment to multilateralism and South–South cooperation.
