Education Directors & CHASS Commit to Advancing Religious Tolerance in Schools

The District and Municipal Directors of Education, along with the Conference of Heads of Government Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) in the Greater Accra Region, have pledged to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Religious Tolerance in Government Assisted and Private Mission Schools.

The commitment was made at a one-day sensitisation workshop organised by the National Peace Council (NPC) in partnership with TUDEC Development Centre.

The workshop, held under the theme “Promoting Religious Tolerance in Schools,” aimed to deepen understanding of the MoU launched on September 4, 2025.

Speaking at the workshop last Friday, in  Accra, the Governing Board Member of NPC, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, urged Ghanaians to cherish the nation’s long-standing inter-faith harmony, stressing that peace and development go hand in hand.

He called for tolerance, respect for differences, and discipline among students, emphasising that discipline is the bridge between purpose and achievement.

The President of TUDEC, Mr Cafer Tepeli, highlighted the importance of peaceful co-existence in schools and called for a stronger appreciation of diverse faiths and cultures.

The Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Hajia Katumi Natogmah Attah, emphasised that religious tolerance was not merely about avoiding conflict but about creating safe, respectful learning environments where every learner feels valued regardless of religious background.

She noted that the MoU represents a shared commitment between the Ghana Education Service and religious partners to promote tolerance while safeguarding the core mandate of education.

The National President of the Conference of Directors of Education (CODE), Mr Ibrahim Mumuni, reaffirmed the Directors’ commitment to implementing the document and urged stakeholders to adopt best practices and promote discipline in schools and society.

Mr Vincent Esoah, Headmaster of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School and Vice Chair of Greater Accra CHASS, also pledged support for implementing the guidelines to strengthen harmony in schools.

The workshop brought together representatives from the Ghana Education Service, COMEU, chaplains, and head teachers from selected schools across the Greater Accra Region.
