Deputy Defence Minister Meets Asantehene Ahead of The Accra-Kumasi Highway Project

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Mr Brogya Genfi, has paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace, presenting plans for a landmark road construction project linking Accra to Kumasi.

At the meeting on Friday, the Deputy Minister presented a detailed document outlining plans for the construction of a 175.7-kilometre, six-lane bypass road stretching from Accra to Kumasi and a pictorial representations of the proposed road as well as key logistical and administrative arrangements required for its successful implementation.

Mr Brogya Genfi reassured communities likely to be affected by the ambitious project of the government’s full commitment to providing adequate compensation to all displaced individuals and landowners along the project corridor.

The Deputy Minister indicated that military personnel are expected to commence land clearing operations within the coming weeks, ahead of the deployment of engineers to the site, adding that work on the project was already underway in the Eastern Region and expected to progressively extend into the Ashanti Region.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed his full support for the initiative, recognising its potential to transform economic activity and ease travel between Ghana’s two largest cities.

He appealed for the inclusion of the Sewia road in the government’s development agenda, drawing attention to its prolonged state of neglect despite serving a community with a functioning hospital.
