ASSIN NORTH BIRTH AND DEATH REGISTRY SENSITIZED ON RTI ACT TO PROMOTE OPEN GOVERNANCE

The Assin North District Birth and Death Registry has undergone a sensitization programme on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2019 (Act 989) as part of efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery within public institutions. The educational session, held on Wednesday, 4th March, 2026, was facilitated by the Assin North RTI Officer to deepen staff understanding of the law and its practical application in public administration.

During the engagement, the RTI Officer provided participants with a comprehensive explanation of the RTI Act and its importance in promoting openness and accountability in governance. Staff members were taken through the procedures for submitting information requests, including the timelines for processing applications and circumstances under which requests may be treated as urgent. The Officer also explained the different modes of application, such as electronic and written submissions, as well as the requirements applicants must meet when seeking information from public institutions.

The sensitization further addressed the categories of exempt and unexempt information under the law and the procedures for handling requests. Participants were educated on how institutions are expected to process applications and communicate responses to applicants in line with the provisions of the Act. The Information Officer emphasized the importance of professionalism and responsiveness in handling information requests to ensure compliance with the law and improve public trust in state institutions.

The programme ended with an interactive discussion session where participants asked questions and shared views on the implementation of the RTI Act within their work environment. The RTI Officer reiterated that the law serves as a key instrument for promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen confidence in public institutions. The engagement highlighted the critical role of Information Officers in advancing open governance through continuous education and institutional sensitization programmes.
