Ghana pledges full support for elected African States in IMO Council

Ghana has pledged its unwavering support for all elected African states in the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), reinforcing its commitment to advancing African solidarity, representation, and influence within the global maritime governance framework.

During the event, the Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, described the election results as a “critical advancement for Africa,” highlighting the continent’s rising influence in shaping the future of global shipping practices.

The Board Chairperson of the GMA and former Alternate Permanent Representative of Ghana to the IMO, Jemilat Jawulaa Mahamah, noted the importance of increased representation. “The representation of Africa has improved significantly compared to a decade ago, reflecting the growth of the industry here,” she said.

The GMA has expressed its intention to continue playing a vital role at both the global and national levels in advancing Ghana’s maritime interests. With Ghana’s pledge of support, the nation aims to promote stronger collaboration among African states within the IMO, enhancing the continent’s collective voice in maritime affairs.

The elections saw Liberia retaining its seat in Category A, while Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa secured victories in Category C. This collective success underscores a robust and unified voice for Africa on the world maritime stage, marking a significant milestone for the continent.
