MIIF Supports Over 90 Female STEM Students and Expands Initiative to Tertiary Institutions

The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Income Investment Fund, Justina Nelson, has disclosed that the institution has supported more than 90 female students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programmes in mining communities across the country.

She explained that the support forms part of the efforts to expand opportunities for young women in technical education pathways linked to the mining sector.

She made these remarks during discussions with a delegation from Women in Mining (WIM) Ghana, where both parties explored ways to deepen collaboration on gender inclusion and skills development.

She welcomed ongoing engagement with the organisation and lauded them for the sustained advocacy for greater female participation in the extractive sector.

She said while progress has been made in improving women’s involvement in mining, more effort is required to expand their presence in technical and managerial positions across the industry.

She stated that the Fund is set to extend the initiative to additional tertiary institutions.

She said the expansion is intended to widen access and strengthen the pipeline of women entering STEM-related careers connected to mining and related industries.

On her part, the President of WIM Ghana, Rosemary Oppong Kwasie, said the organisation is focusing on reducing the gender gap in extractive industries through targeted training, technical workshops and industry seminars.

She added that the group is prioritising internship placements for female students and structured mentorship programmes to support career progression and policy engagement.

She noted that these efforts would strengthen professional development and widen economic opportunities for women working in mining and related fields.
