Solar-Powered ICT Lab Commissioned in Damango to Boost Digital Education

A modern, solar-powered ICT laboratory has been commissioned in Damango, giving students in the Savannah regional capital access to a facility that runs entirely on green energy and will not be affected by power outages or disruptions from the national grid.

President John Dramani Mahama commissioned the Yamoransa Model Lab 13 on Saturday during his two-day Resetting Ghana working tour of the Savannah region.

The facility was delivered by the Helping Africa Foundation, with President Mahama serving as the local promoter of the project.

The President said he was particularly pleased that the lab runs on solar energy.

“We won’t have the issue where NEDCO comes and cuts them off because they haven’t paid their electricity bill,” he told those gathered at the commissioning.

He linked the facility directly to the government’s Basic STEM programme, which was launched a day earlier in Sawla, saying the lab gives children a space to continue developing their skills in information and communications technology beyond the classroom.

The President said the two initiatives complement each other and are part of the same broader effort to build a generation of young Ghanaians grounded in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The President also paid tribute to the late Alhaji Muniru Limuna and former District Chief Executive Ali Kassim, whom he credited as the main drivers of the project on the ground.

He said it was his first time seeing the completed facility, having only laid the foundation before stepping away and leaving its execution in their hands.
