RTI OFFICER EDUCATES STAFF AND STUDENTS ON ACCESS TO INFORMATION RIGHTS IN KUKURANTUMI

The Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly, through its Right to Information (RTI) Officer, organized a sensitization programme on the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989) for staff and students of Presby Junior High School at Kukurantumi on 4th March, 2026. The engagement formed part of the Assembly’s efforts to promote awareness of the RTI Law and encourage active citizen participation in governance through access to information.

Addressing the participants, the RTI Officer educated the students and teachers on the provisions of the RTI Act and its significance in promoting transparency, accountability, and community engagement. The Officer explained how individuals and organizations can apply for information from public institutions and emphasized that access to information is a constitutional right that supports informed decision-making and national development. The sensitization was conducted in both English and Twi to ensure effective understanding among participants.

The programme attracted 52 participants, made up of 31 males and 21 females, including teachers and students of the school. Teachers commended the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly for the initiative and described the programme as timely and informative. Students also expressed excitement after learning that the law makes provision for minors below the age of 18 to seek information through the appropriate processes. Some students noted that the knowledge gained would be useful during future academic research at higher educational levels.

The sensitization ended successfully with an interactive session where participants had the opportunity to ask questions and seek further clarification on the RTI Law. The RTI Officer addressed the concerns raised and encouraged participants to make good use of the law as a tool for promoting openness, accountability, and effective community participation in governance. The programme further demonstrated the commitment of the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly to empowering citizens through public education on the Right to Information Act.
