The West Akim Municipal Assembly has intensified efforts to promote participatory governance and community development through a Right to Information (RTI) sensitization programme held for stakeholders in Topease. Addressing participants, the Municipal RTI Officer, Mr. Enchill Daniel, underscored the critical role of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989) in fostering transparency, accountability, and good governance. He explained that the law empowers citizens to access information held by public institutions, enabling them to better understand government decisions and contribute meaningfully to development processes. He further noted that limited public awareness remains a key challenge, making such sensitization programmes essential for maximizing the impact of the Act.

The engagement highlighted the importance of access to information within the local government framework, particularly in supporting community involvement in planning and decision-making. Participants were taken through the legal provisions of the RTI Act, the procedures for requesting information from public institutions, and the shared responsibilities of both citizens and public officials in ensuring effective implementation. The session emphasized that informed communities are better positioned to monitor projects, demand accountability, and advocate for their development priorities.

The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, where participants sought clarification on various aspects of the law and called for sustained public education initiatives. The successful sensitization is expected to strengthen collaboration between the Assembly and the Topease community, reinforcing the role of the RTI Law and Information Officers as key drivers of inclusive governance and sustainable community development in the West Akim Municipality.
