RTI ENGAGEMENT AT UNIMAC-IL ORIENTATION STRENGTHENS TRANSPARENCY EFFORTS

The importance of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2019 (Act 989) in promoting open governance and community development was brought to the fore during a sensitization session held at the University of Media, Arts and Communication – Institute of Languages (UniMAC-IL). The engagement took place on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, as part of the orientation programme for fresh students of the 2025/2026 academic year at the university’s East Legon campus.

During the session, the RTI Officer provided students with a comprehensive overview of the law, emphasizing its role in enhancing transparency and accountability within public institutions. Students were introduced to how the Act enables them to access relevant information, particularly on matters affecting their academic environment, thereby empowering them to stay informed and actively participate in institutional processes.

A key highlight of the engagement was the emphasis on inclusivity under the RTI framework. The officer explained that the law applies to all persons, regardless of nationality, allowing both Ghanaian and international students to request information upon presentation of valid identification. Provisions were also noted for persons with disabilities, including the availability of accessible formats such as braille, ensuring that no group is excluded from exercising the right to information.

Students were encouraged to take advantage of the RTI Desk on campus, particularly for academic research, assignments, and project work. They were guided through the procedures for submitting information requests and informed about exempt categories of information. The session concluded with assurances that RTI Officers are present across public institutions to facilitate timely responses, reinforcing the Act’s role as a practical tool for openness, accountability, and responsive governance.
