The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has launched a fundraising luncheon in support of the Burma Camp Redevelopment Project, aimed at addressing the long-standing accommodation deficit and upgrading military infrastructure.
Speaking at the event on Friday, the Chief of the Defence Staff, William Agyapong, revealed that many of the existing structures at Burma Camp date back to the colonial era and no longer meet modern standards.
Lt Gen Agyapong further disclosed that upon completion of all five phases, the project would triple the camp’s accommodation capacity while utilising only a portion of the available land.
“The redevelopment will deliver modern housing designed to improve the living conditions of military personnel,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the Acting Minister for Defence, the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, revealed that the president was committed to resolving the Armed Forces’ housing deficit, with plans underway to provide fifty-two-bedroom housing units.
He also called on stakeholders to support the initiative, describing it as a transformative effort to turn Burma Camp into a modern, sustainable military community.
The Guest of Honour, Samuel Esson Jonah, highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that although Burma Camp has long served as a home for personnel safeguarding national security, its development has not kept pace with modern expectations.
He explained that the project would be executed through a public-private partnership, supported by government contributions.
According to him, the success of the initiative would depend on four key pillars: clarity of vision, credibility of leadership, accountability in process, and alignment in purpose. He described these principles as essential to transforming ambition into reality.
Sir Samuel Jonah commended the five-member Board of Trustees and urged them to uphold transparency and accountability in executing their mandate.
