EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH ACCESS: RTI AWARENESS REACHES PERSONS WITH DISABILITY

A sensitization event aimed at strengthening transparency and inclusion in governance has underscored the critical role of the Right to Information (RTI) Law in community development. Held on Tuesday, 30th December 2025, at the Amansie South District Assembly’s Conference Room, the session brought together persons with disability to deepen their understanding of their legal right to access public information.

Leading the engagement was the District’s Right to Information Officer, Mr. Thomas Fosu, who provided a detailed breakdown of the RTI framework and its practical application. Participants were taken through the procedures for requesting information from public institutions, the timelines involved, and the responsibilities of public officers under the law. The session emphasized that access to information is not only a legal right but also a tool for promoting accountability and improving service delivery.

Mr. Fosu highlighted the importance of active citizen participation, noting that informed communities are better positioned to demand transparency and hold duty-bearers accountable. He encouraged participants to make use of the RTI Law in addressing issues affecting their welfare, stressing that public institutions are obligated to respond to legitimate information requests in a timely and accessible manner.

The event also reinforced the need for inclusivity in governance processes, ensuring that persons with disability are not left behind in national development efforts. By equipping participants with knowledge and practical skills, the sensitization forms part of broader efforts to empower marginalized groups to actively engage in decision-making and contribute meaningfully to community development.
