Staff of the Central Administration Department of the Afigya Kwabre North District Assembly have been sensitized on the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), as part of efforts to strengthen awareness and implementation of the law within public institutions. The engagement, held on February 24, 2026, was facilitated by the Assembly’s Right to Information Officer, Yvonne Opoku Agyemang, who guided staff through the key provisions and significance of the Act.
During the session, Miss Opoku Agyemang provided a comprehensive overview of the RTI Law, highlighting its importance in promoting openness, accountability, and citizen participation in governance. She explained the procedures for requesting information under Section 18 of the Act, the responsibilities of public institutions in providing access to information, and the categories of persons eligible to request information. She also discussed exempt information under the law and clarified the circumstances under which certain information may be withheld in the public interest.
The sensitization created an interactive platform for staff to engage with the RTI Officer on practical issues relating to the implementation of the law within the public service. Participants demonstrated keen interest in the discussions by asking thoughtful and relevant questions, many of which focused on institutional obligations, access procedures, and misconceptions surrounding the Act. Miss Opoku Agyemang addressed the concerns raised and emphasized the need for public officials to understand their role in ensuring compliance with the RTI framework.
In her concluding remarks, the RTI Officer expressed appreciation to the staff for their active participation and encouraged them to share the knowledge acquired with colleagues and the public. She stressed that promoting awareness of the RTI Law is essential to fostering a culture of transparency and accountability in public administration. The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by the Afigya Kwabre North District Assembly to strengthen open governance and improve public trust through effective access to information.
