Prioritise IGF collection to propel the development of our Districts and Municipalities – North East Regional Minister

The North East Regional Minister, Mr Ibrahim Tia, has urged the Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) in the region to prioritise the collection of Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to propel development in their respective Assemblies.

Some of the measures he outlined for the Assemblies to adopt to improve their IGF mobilisation included: strengthening the Zonal Councils to make them more effective in revenue mobilisation, prioritising and enforcing property rate collection across all MDAs, and intensifying public education to encourage ratepayers’ compliance.

The minister said this on Thursday, when he addressed MDCEs at a meeting in Nalerigu in the North East Region.

Mr Tia said that poor performance in IGF collection results in low District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) allocation and poor performance in the District Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT), which are major sources of revenue for the development of the Municipalities and Districts.

“I am saddened to report that for the first three quarters of the year, as at the end of September 2025, our MDAs were able to generate only GH₵900,996.06,” he lamented, saying that was a clear indication that they had failed to maximise local revenue mobilisation potentials.

Mr Tia also identified inadequate water as another challenge in the region, saying he was determined to find a lasting solution to this problem.

“It is to provide a sustainable source of water for domestic and agricultural purposes, and I am determined to pursue my vision of acquiring a Borehole Drilling Rig for the drilling and installation of solar-powered mechanised boreholes for the region,” he disclosed.

He said the equipment would be the collective property of the Assemblies, so he urged the MDAs to support him in acquiring it this year.
