The Minister for Transport, Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe has met with the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) and the Ship Owners and Agents Association of Ghana (SOAAG) to discuss pressing challenges related to the recently passed Ghana Shipping Act and its Legislative Instrument (LI).

The meeting held on Thursday, provided a platform for stakeholders to voice their concerns, which included the implementation of a 2% carrier tax, lengthy approval periods for charges, complexities in demurrage calculations, lien rights, and the GSA’s dual role as both shipper advocate and regulator.

In response to these issues, the minister pledged to conduct a swift review of the LI to ensure alignment with global best practices while safeguarding the interests of local shippers.

“The objective is to enhance a sustainable shipping environment in Ghana that enhances efficiency and positions the country as a marine hub for West Africa,” Mr Nikpe stated.

All parties in attendance recognized the importance of balancing interests among stakeholders to promote mutual support within the industry.

They emphasized their shared identity as Ghanaians and the collective responsibility to address these challenges for the benefit of the nation’s shipping sector.
