The Local Government Service has reaffirmed its commitment to becoming a world-class, decentralised, and client-oriented service as it marks over two decades of its establishment in 2003.
The Head of the Service sated that, as enshrined in Act 936 of 2016, the service’s mandate is “To secure the effective administration and management of the decentralised local government system in the country” and since its establishment, the service has made significant strides in achieving this vision.
He noted that at the centre of executing this mandate lies in the role of the human resources of the Service which includes managing the day-to-day administration of the service, implementing decisions of the Local Government Service Council, and providing technical and other support to the service.
He said this at the opening of a three-day management retreat at Busua near Takoradi aimed to build a culture of effective team building and innovation within the Office of the Head of Local Government Service.
Prof Mensah emphasized that leadership is not about titles and positions but about one life influencing another and getting the work done, describing these principles as imperatives for achieving the shared focus to transform the local government into a responsive, transparent, inclusive and development-driven institution that empowers communities and ensures accountable service delivery.
Prof Mensah noted that the retreat provides a platform for sharing knowledge and discussing practical strategies required to enhance service delivery and bring management up to speed with emerging trends in the local governance sector to enable them to provide the needed leadership for the service.
He expressed confidence that at the end of the retreat, participants would have been equipped with the needed strategic leadership and management skills necessary to drive development within the service.
Prof Mensah encouraged officers to actively participate to ensure they reap the full benefits intended for the program and extended profound gratitude to GIZ for their contributions in advancing local governance in Ghana and the entire African region.
