Interior Ministry to Launch Gun Amnesty
October 28, 2025 Interior 0 CommentThe Minister for the Interior, Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has announced the Ministry’s plans to launch a Gun Amnesty aimed at reducing the proliferation of illicit arms in the country.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry on Monday, the initiative will begin on November 11, 2025, and run for a period of six weeks.
The Gun Amnesty provides a safe and voluntary opportunity for citizens to surrender unregistered or illicitly held firearms without fear of prosecution. This initiative is further supported by a ban on the use of arms during traditional festivities, as well as restrictions on the importation and sale of firearms.
It stated that the primary objective of this initiative is to significantly reduce the number of illicit arms in circulation, thereby enhancing public safety, national security, and social cohesion.
“The Ministry believes that this initiative will help create a safer environment for all Ghanaians,” it added.
To ensure the successful implementation of the initiative, the Ministry noted that it is engaging with key stakeholders, including Regional Ministers, traditional authorities, and community leaders, for sensitisation and to mobilise public support.
The Ministry emphasised its commitment to working collaboratively to keep Ghana safe and free from gun-related violence, appealing to all Ghanaians to support this initiative and join efforts to build a more secure and prosperous society.
“Further details on the Gun Amnesty and additional measures will be announced in the coming weeks, as the Ministry continues its commitment to ensuring internal security and maintaining law and order in the country,” it stated.
