The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council (GARPC), in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has organised a preventive peace intervention for key stakeholders in the Ayawaso East Constituency ahead of the March 3, 2026, by-election.
The initiative sought to reduce the risk of electoral violence by creating a neutral platform for dialogue and consensus-building among stakeholders.
The programme also aimed to strengthen collaboration with security agencies and enhance public awareness on maintaining law and order throughout the electoral process.
Speaking at the event at Nima Central, the Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Peace Council, Rt. Rev. Samuel Kofi Osabutey said by-elections were an important component of parliamentary democracy and that citizens had a constitutional right to express their political choices.
He noted that tensions often arose from competition over differing ideas and limited resources, stressing the need for tolerance and respect for opposing views.
Rt. Rev. Osabutey underscored the role of the youth in democratic governance and peace building, urging them to refrain from violence and contribute to building a peaceful community.
The Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education, Mr Mawuli Agbenu, educated participants on the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999), stressing the severe legal consequences of engaging in vigilantism, including land guarding.
He warned that offenders faced lengthy prison sentences and disqualification from holding public office, and advised the youth to avoid activities that could jeopardise their future.
The Acting Regional Executive Secretary, Mr Henry Attoh Okai, highlighted the importance of peace education and intensified public awareness on political vigilantism and election-related violence.
He said a comprehensive understanding of peace was important to addressing electoral tensions and ensuring stability.
The programme enhanced stakeholders’ understanding of election-related violence, violent extremism risks, and the legal implications of vigilantism. It also strengthened resilience among youth and community groups against political manipulation and violence, while promoting patriotism and a renewed commitment to peaceful elections.
Through the intervention, stakeholders reaffirmed their dedication to peace and pledged to promote tolerance and non-violence within their communities, contributing to a stable and peaceful electoral environment in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
