Government has secured $500 million from the World Bank to rehabilitate feeder roads across the country.
President John Dramani Mahama made the disclosure on Thursday while responding to question on the state roads in Wenchi at a stakeholder engagement at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in the Bono Region during the second day of his Resetting Ghana Tour.
“Government has secured 500 million dollars from the World Bank to rehabilitate feeder roads nationwide,” President Mahama said,
The funding, according to him is a direct response to the deteriorating state of feeder roads that connect farming communities and rural areas to major markets and transport routes.
On Sunyani’s road network specifically, the President told the gathering that work had already begun on the Sunyani Outer Ring Road and that designs for the Inner Ring Road had been completed. “Budgetary provisions are being made for its construction,” he said, signalling that the Inner Ring Road was next in line for funding.
President Mahama also announced that the government was set to build a brand new airport in Sunyani after concluding that the existing facility could not be expanded to accommodate larger aircraft.
He explained that the current Sunyani Airport’s 1.5-kilometre runway was too limited and that surrounding developments had made expansion of the existing site impossible.
“Due to surrounding developments, expansion is not feasible,” he said.
The government has secured new land with the support of traditional authorities for a replacement facility with a 2.4-kilometre runway.
“Groundbreaking for the new project will take place soon,” President Mahama said.
On sports infrastructure, the President announced plans to construct three regional stadia in the short term, designed as multipurpose facilities for both sports and community use, as part of a wider drive to expand infrastructure beyond the major cities.
