The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr James Gyakye Quayson, has assured Ghana’s readiness to work closely with Canada to ensure smooth immigration processes for Ghanaian nationals travelling to Canada for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

He urged the two countries to create provisions for legal pathways of migration, describing it as a necessity to avert the perils associated with irregular migration.

He made this statement during a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada, Dr Harpreet S. Kochhar, on Tuesday in Accra.

The Deputy Minister commended the longstanding friendly relations between Ghana and Canada and emphasised the need to further strengthen cooperation for mutual benefits.

He stated that the two countries could consider a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Labour Mobility to address the challenge of irregular migration.

On his part, Dr Harpreet S. Kochhar outlined Canada’s concerns regarding irregular migration; however, he declared Canada’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and well-coordinated immigration process for the FIFA World Cup 2026, in close cooperation with the Government.
