GAF receives $1 Million Female Body Armour Donation from the US Government
August 25, 2025 Defence / News / Top Stories 0 CommentThe Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has received a donation of female body armour worth one million dollars ($1 million) from the United States government to enhance the safety and effectiveness of female soldiers in peacekeeping missions.
This donation is part of the Women’s Body Armour Quadrilateral Pilot Project, a collaborative initiative launched in 2023 by the Governments of Ghana, Zambia, the Netherlands, and the United States.
During the handover ceremony on Wednesday in Accra, the U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, Mr Rolf Olson, stated that the body armour is specifically designed for female military personnel and is expected to enhance the safety and operational effectiveness of Ghanaian female peacekeepers.
He stated that the high-quality gear would help protect Ghana’s female peacekeepers as they work to ensure security, stability, and prosperity in West Africa, across the continent, and around the world.
“As soldiers stand on the front lines defending our nations, their personal protection is paramount. This equipment will safeguard Ghanaian soldiers, who, in turn, protect each one of us,” Mr Olson stated.
He also expressed condolences to the GAF following the recent helicopter crash that claimed the lives of several personnel, and described the donation as both a practical contribution and a symbolic tribute to the fallen soldiers.
The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, expressed appreciation on behalf of the GAF for prioritising gender inclusion in global security, stressing that the donation strengthens the ability of female personnel to serve effectively in high-risk environments.
He added that the support underscores Ghana’s growing military capacity and commitment to global peace and security.
He assured that the GAF would put the donated equipment to the best use, and that the training already provided to soldiers would ensure proper handling and maintenance.
