
Foreign Affairs Minister Arrives in Jamaica for Official Visit
January 26, 2026 Foreign Affairs 0 CommentThe Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has arrived in Jamaica for a two-day official and solidarity visit to engage with Ghanaian troops stationed in the Caribbean nation.
Speaking upon his arrival on Sunday, the Minister expressed gratitude to her Jamaican counterpart, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, for the warm reception and exceptional hospitality.
He said a central aspect of the visit was to interact with Ghanaian soldiers who have been actively involved in rebuilding efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
“It is important for me to meet our gallant troops who have dedicated their time and efforts to assist in this recovery, and shall be delivering a special message from Ghana’s Commander-in-Chief, H. E. John Dramani Mahama, to our soldiers who were drawn from the celebrated 48 Engineer Regiment,” he noted.
Mr Ablakwa added that he would meet the soldiers and engage in bilateral discussions with Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Dr Andrew Holness. He said these talks are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation between the two nations, particularly on health and education.
The Minister mentioned that the visit aims to finalise key consultations regarding the exportation of Ghanaian healthcare professionals and teachers to Jamaica later this year.
He added that the ancestral and familial bond between Ghana and Jamaica should never be broken.
“This visit signifies a further strengthening of relations between the two nations, rooted in shared history and mutual support, he said.
The delegation to Jamaica consists of the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence K. S. Gbetanu, Presidential Special Envoy to the Caribbean, H.E. Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi, high-ranking military officials and senior directors from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education, and Health.
