The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mrs Emelia Arthur, has sworn in a 12-member Board of the Fisheries Commission under the new Fisheries Act 1146.
The reconstituted board reflects provisions in the law that widen representation to improve oversight and coordination in the management of the country’s fisheries resources.
Speaking at the ceremony in Accra on Friday, the Minister said the appointment goes beyond administration and carries national responsibility.
She urged members to uphold accountability, protect the marine environment, and support the country’s Blue Economy agenda.
She said the board is expected to promote a fisheries sector that is sustainable, well governed and resilient, while supporting food supply, job creation and economic growth.
“The mix of institutions is expected to improve collaboration and bring technical expertise to issues such as sustainable fishing, marine conservation and regulation,” she added.
The Board is chaired by Prof. Wisdom Akpalu and includes representatives from state institutions and industry.
Other members are Dr Afisah Zakariah from the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Prof. Benjamin Betey Campion from the Fisheries Commission, Mubarick Masawudu, Commodore Ben Baba Abdul, Eric Ken Winful, Esi Nana Nerquaye-Tetteh, Stephen Yeboah Ampiaw, Ruby Asmah, Esi Biney, Emmanuel Allegye-Cudjoe and Frank Kwesi Alhoon.
