The Deputy Minister for Transport, Madam Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has assured management and staff of Intercity STC Coaches Limited of the government’s commitment to revitalising the company’s operations to meet the growing demand for safe and reliable intercity transport.
During a familiarisation visit to the company on Thursday in Accra, Madam Affo-Toffey praised STC for its long-standing reputation as a trusted transport provider and acknowledged that recent challenges have weakened its performance.
“Over the years, Intercity STC has established itself as the preferred choice for road transport, earning the trust of travellers through professionalism and high safety standards. However, this reputation has come under pressure due to a shortage of coaches, reliance on ageing buses, and the outsourcing of key services to private partners, which has affected revenue,” she noted.
The Deputy Minister stressed that expanding STC’s fleet remains a priority for the Ministry, as the limited number of operational buses continues to hamper the company’s mandate of providing nationwide intercity, international, and parcel delivery services.
She further stated the President’s commitment to implementing the 24-Hour Economy Policy, which requires STC to strengthen its operations and provide round-the-clock services nationwide.
Calling for renewed collaboration between the Ministry and STC, Madam Affo-Toffey emphasised that with joint efforts, the company could be restored to its full potential as a leading player in Ghana’s transport sector.
The Managing Director of Intercity STC Coaches Limited, Alhaji Alhassan Ligbi, outlined the company’s mandate and ongoing initiatives to stabilise its operations within the next two years.
He expressed appreciation for the Deputy Minister’s visit and pledged to work closely with the Ministry to address the challenges facing the company.
Alhaji Ligbi acknowledged the severe difficulties confronting STC, including substantial debt, an ageing fleet, low staff morale, and deteriorating infrastructure. He called on the government and private stakeholders to support the company’s turnaround efforts, adding that with the necessary investment and collaboration, STC could expand its services to meet the needs of travellers across the country.
