The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has reiterated the government’s dedication to enhancing the Ghana Armed Forces, while cautioning personnel against engaging in unauthorised guard duties.

During a working visit to various units and commands under the 1 Garrison in Tema, Dr. Boamah announced several government-backed initiatives which included the expansion of manpower and construction of 10,000 new housing units.

He touched on the completion of previously stalled accommodation projects to help address the current housing deficit of 17,000 units and outlined plans to replace outdated vehicles to improve troop mobility and operational efficiency.

In terms of energy and sustainability, Dr. Boamah advocated for the integration of solar energy solutions alongside conventional generators. This, he explained, would enhance surveillance capabilities and reduce fuel costs.

The minister said a high standard of discipline and professionalism is expected from the Ghana Armed Forces and that such standards must not be compromised and warned that personnel involved in unauthorised activities, as well as those who direct them, would face disciplinary action.

He acknowledged the vital role of the Navy in safeguarding Ghana’s maritime domain and key infrastructure such as the Akosombo Dam, Adomi Bridge, and offshore oil installations.

He cited growing threats including illegal fishing, piracy, drug trafficking, oil theft, and extremist activities as reasons for strengthening maritime security.

Dr. Boamah also stressed the importance of protecting inland water bodies and agricultural zones, urging heightened vigilance in regions vulnerable to extremist exploitation.

He gave the assurance that the government remains fully committed to equipping the Ghana Armed Forces with the necessary tools and resources to protect national interests.

The Garrison Commander and Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Naval Command (ENC), Commodore Solomon Asiedu-Larbi, expressed hope that the Minister’s visit would result in increased support for naval infrastructure and strengthen operational presence along Ghana’s eastern coastal waters.
