The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to use the next National Sanitation Day (NSD), scheduled for Saturday, January 10, 2026, to clear the accumulated filth from Christmas-related activities.
In a statement released by the AMA on Wednesday, the Assembly described the next NSD as “strategic and urgent,” saying it would happen after a “period of heightened commercial activities, increased waste generation and greater pressure on the city’s sanitation infrastructure.”
The cleansing activities for the day would focus on desilting and cleaning drains, sweeping streets and lanes, removal of unauthorized banners and posters, as well as undertaking general clean-up operations in markets, lorry parks and other public space such as all electoral areas, communities, markets and the Central Business District, with intensified work planned at selected key locations, including the Cable and Wireless enclave in Okai koi South, Agbogbloshie Market and its surroundings.
According to the statement, in accordance with the presidential directive and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (Communal Labour) Bye-Laws, 2017, enacted under Section 181 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), all shops, markets, and business premises are required to remain closed from 6:00 a.m. until the conclusion of the exercise to enable full participation. Non-compliance with this directive would result in legal consequences.
