Ghana to Host Key Diaspora Summit in 2025, Advocating for Reparations and Unity

Ghana is set to host a maiden diaspora summit from December 19-20, 2025 in Accra.

The Minister for Foreign affairs, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed this at the launch of the summit on Wednesday in Accra.

He stated that the summit’s theme, “Resetting Ghana: The Diaspora as the 17th Region,” reflects that Ghana is incomplete without its people abroad.

“We cannot be complete if we do not ensure that they take their rightful place in all we do as a ministry and as a government,” he added.

The minister announced that the upcoming summit will focus heavily on the contentious issue of reparations for historical injustices.

“This summit will be a golden opportunity to continue the struggle towards justice, expressing pride that Ghana has been chosen by the African Union to lead this vital charge”, he said.

He revealed that the mandate for reparations advocacy has been extended for ten years, ensuring that future leaders will continue this important work.

According to him, all diaspora members traveling to Ghana for the summit will be eligible for visa-free entry. “We take the view that you cannot say your brothers and sisters should come home and then treat them like foreigners”, he stated.

As part of the summit’s promotional efforts, he revealed that five distinguished individuals will receive diplomatic passports to aid in their mobilization efforts.

Among them are Wode Maya a travel vlogger, Lady Denta Amoateng an entrepreneur, Rocky Dawuni a Grammy nominated musician, Anita Erskine a broadcaster and Ibrahim Mahama a visual artist.

“These carefully selected envoys will champion our diaspora agenda and reparations agenda,” he noted.

He encouraged all Africans in the diaspora to consider Ghana as a home, stating, “We are with open arms, ready at all times to welcome you to our safe, beautiful, and hospitable country”, he added

The upcoming Diaspora Summit promises to be an event in the ongoing quest for justice and unity among Africans worldwide.

It is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Office at the Presidency and the Ghana Tourism Authority.
