August 14, 2025 Top Stories / Interior 0 CommentThe Ghana Police Service has announced temporary road closures around Independence Square on Friday, August 15, 2025, for the Inter-Denominational and Inter-Faith State Funeral of the military helicopter crash victims.
Police said the road closures and traffic diversions are necessary to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management during the state funeral scheduled at Independence Square for the victims who died in last Wednesday’s crash.
The designated roads to be closed around the event venue include 28th February Road from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction, Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street, Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, and Starlet 91 Road at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.
Police have outlined specific traffic diversions for motorists to follow during the funeral proceedings. Traffic from La, Labone and Osu on 28th February Road towards Accra Central Business District and the Ministries will be diverted onto Salem Avenue Road at Castle Traffic Light to connect with Oxford Street.
Motorists from Lokko Street in Osu heading towards Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street in Osu as alternative routes.
Traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection.
Traffic from AU Circle towards Castle Road through Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be diverted onto Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to connect with Abdul Nasser Road in front of the Ghana Institute of Journalism area.
Only vehicles with approved windscreen stickers marked RED with VVIP inscription will be allowed to enter the Black Star Square arena and park.
Police have earmarked several areas for car parking during the event, including the Black Star Square for VVIP and VIP vehicles, the forecourt of the State House, the International Conference Centre, Access Bank Car Park, the Osu Cemetery car Park, the Accra Sports Stadium Car Park, the Ministries Areas, Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park, Marine Drive Football Park, and Afua Sutherland Car Park.
No vehicle will be allowed to park at unauthorized places or drive through the road blockages. Security vehicles and vehicles carrying dignitaries will be allowed after thorough checks.
Traffic Police Officers will be stationed to direct and assist motorists to the appropriate car parks and diverted roads.
Towing and recovery trucks will be available to remove any abandoned, disabled, or wrongly parked vehicles in and around the event grounds.
Motorists are advised to take note of these arrangements and plan alternative routes before embarking on their journey.
The general public, especially motorists, are urged to cooperate with the Police and other security agencies to ensure effective traffic management and control during the state funeral proceedings.
