The Akuapim South Municipal Assembly has taken another step toward deepening transparency and citizen participation through a targeted engagement with motor riders on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2019 (Act 989). Held on 15th January 2026 at the Municipal Assembly’s Hall, the sensitization programme formed part of ongoing public education efforts to broaden awareness of citizens’ rights to access information held by public institutions.
Organized by the Assembly’s RTI Unit, the session focused on empowering motor riders, an important segment of the local economy, with knowledge of their constitutional rights. Participants were taken through the purpose of the RTI Act, including the categories of information that can be requested from public institutions and the role of designated information officers in facilitating access. The engagement underscored the importance of transparency in strengthening accountability and improving public service delivery.
Particular emphasis was placed on the practical relevance of the RTI Law to the daily lives of motor riders. Facilitators explained how access to information can help them better understand municipal decisions, policies, and services that directly impact their operations and livelihoods. By equipping participants with this knowledge, the Division, in collaboration with the Assembly, seeks to promote more informed engagement between citizens and local authorities.
The interactive session also provided a platform for dialogue, with participants raising questions that were addressed by the RTI team. The initiative highlighted the Assembly’s commitment to inclusive governance by ensuring that all groups within the municipality are informed and involved in decision-making processes. As community engagements continue, the RTI Law remains a vital tool for fostering transparency, building trust, and driving sustainable local development.
