Interior Minister Reaffirms Ghana’s Commitment to Preventing Violent Extremism

The Minister for the Interior, Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to preventing violent extremism and enhancing stability in its northern regions, which remain vulnerable to spillover threats from the Sahel.

Speaking during the National Senior Level Strategic Dialogue hosted under the Coastal States Stability Mechanism (CSSM), Mr Muntaka described Ghana as a beacon of peace in West Africa, but cautioned that such stability has never been accidental.

He stressed that it requires deliberate planning, strong collaboration, and timely interventions to address vulnerabilities in regions most exposed to violent extremism.

“While Ghana enjoys relative stability, we are not immune to terrorist attacks. We must remain proactive and productive in our response,” the Minister warned, underscoring the importance of improved service delivery and cross-sector coordination to prevent instability from spilling over from the Sahel.

Mr Muntaka reaffirmed the Government’s long-term commitment to deepening collaboration with partners and sustaining efforts to strengthen resilience in Northern Ghana, where communities face heightened risks due to limited economic opportunities and social exclusion.

In her remarks, the Chief of Mission for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Ms Fatou Diallo Ndiaye, commended Ghana’s strong leadership and ongoing reforms in the provision of security in the country.

She highlighted IOM’s commitment as a key partner to complement Ghana’s efforts and reassured participants of sustained backing to bolster state presence and community resilience in priority areas.
