Yonsei University Confers Honorary Doctorate in Public Administration on President Mahama

Yonsei University has conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Public Administration on President John Dramani Mahama in recognition of his distinguished public service and leadership.

President of Yonsei University, Professor Dong-Sup Yoon,, conferred the honorary degree on President Mahama on Friday, during a ceremony at the university in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Yoon started that, President Mahama has embodied and advanced the values of democracy, social justice, economic development, and regional cooperation throughout his career.

“He is a distinguished leader who has served his nation with dedication across many levels of public service, including as Member of Parliament, Minister, Vice President, and President” he added.

He noted that President Mahama’s leadership has contributed not only to Ghana’s transformation and development but also to peace and coexistence in West Africa, as well as to shaping global conversations on sustainable development.

Professor Yoon stated that President Mahama’s legacy resonates deeply with the university community.

He noted that the occasion represents a particularly meaningful moment in the deepening of Yonsei’s longstanding engagement with Africa.

The University President disclosed that Yonsei recognized early the importance of Africa and became the first university in Korea to establish the Institute of African Studies, through which the university has steadily expanded both scholarly engagement and practical cooperation with Africa.

He revealed that in February 2026, Yonsei appointed former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as the Honorary Director of the Institute for African Studies, opening a new chapter in strengthening Korea-Africa partnerships.

Professor Yoon stated that the meeting between Ghana, a young nation, and Yonsei University, which for 140 years has cultivated talent devoted to the advancement of Korea and the world, carries deep symbolic meaning.

“This occasion will lead to a future in which the younger generations of both countries pursue greater dreams together through learning, cooperation, and mutual inspiration,” he stressed.

The University President noted that Korea and Ghana have built a relationship of trust over many years, revealing that next year will commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

“Building on the foundation of the past 50 years of friendship, both countries now look ahead to the next 50 years together,” he noted.

Professor Yoon welcomed President Mahama as a member of the Yonsei community, invoking blessings for the President, the Republic of Ghana, and everyone gathered at the ceremony.

The conferment took place during President Mahama’s five-day working visit to the Republic of Korea.
