Transition Committee Submits Report on Return of UGMC to University of Ghana

The nine-member committee tasked with overseeing the return of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the management of the University of Ghana has submitted its final report to President John Dramani Mahama.

The committee, co-chaired by Professor Aaron Lawson and Professor Mutawakilu Iddrissu, presented its findings on Tuesday at the Presidency, seven months after its inauguration on July 8, 2025. The team was originally mandated to complete its work within three months.

President Mahama announced that the government will study the report before presenting it to Cabinet for discussion and adoption. He indicated that once Cabinet approves the report, the administration will outline the specific steps needed for the full transition of the medical facility from the Ministry of Health to the University.

“We are looking to study the report and we will take it to cabinet for discussion. And once cabinet takes a decision and adopts the report, we will itemize what the steps are towards an eventual full transition of the hospital into the service of the university,” the President said.

The committee’s report outlines a roadmap for a seamless transition, with particular emphasis on integrating clinical services with academic research and medical training. This aligns with the government’s vision for the facility, which President Mahama said was originally conceived as more than just a medical center.

“The intention of building the hospital was to create it as a world class center of research and learning for the University of Ghana,” he stated.

The President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving the UGMC’s status as Ghana’s premier quaternary medical facility. He stressed that any transition arrangement must ensure the hospital maintains its world-class standards in clinical care, logistics, and equipment.

President Mahama commended the committee members for their work and dedication to the assignment. “Let me thank the committee very much for this presentation. I don’t know if your work was gratis, but if it was, your reward is in heaven,” the President said, drawing laughter from those present.

The UGMC transition has been a subject of public interest, with stakeholders keen to see how the facility will be managed to serve both its medical and academic purposes effectively.
