TANO SOUTH MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY STRENGTHENS OPEN GOVERNANCE THROUGH RTI SENSITISATION

The Tano South Municipal Assembly has intensified efforts to promote transparency and accountability through an internal sensitisation programme on the Right to Information (RTI) laws and procedures for its Client Service Department. Held on 15th January 2026, the initiative sought to strengthen the capacity of frontline officers to effectively facilitate public access to information, a key pillar of open governance.

The session provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the RTI framework, with particular emphasis on the critical role of the Information Officer in ensuring compliance with the law. Officers were taken through the processes involved in receiving, processing, and responding to RTI requests, including required documentation and stipulated timelines. The training underscored the responsibility of Information Officers as gatekeepers of public information, tasked with balancing transparency with the protection of sensitive data.

Facilitators highlighted that the effective implementation of the RTI Act is central to fostering citizen trust and participation in governance. By equipping client service personnel with the requisite knowledge, the Assembly aims to enhance responsiveness and improve service delivery. Participants were also guided on the importance of confidentiality, professionalism, and adherence to due process when handling requests for information.

The sensitisation programme concluded with an interactive session that allowed participants to seek clarification on their roles and responsibilities under the RTI regime. The initiative is expected to significantly improve the Assembly’s ability to meet its legal obligations while reinforcing its commitment to openness, accountability, and citizen engagement in local governance.
