President John Dramani Mahama has forwarded the name of His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to the Council of State for consideration as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

A press statement signed by spokesperson of the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu on Tuesday announced that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has served with diligence and integrity throughout his judicial career at the High Court, Court of Appeal, and currently the Supreme Court.

The President cited his wealth of experience and long service on the Bench as qualities that render him qualified for the high office.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, following the departure of his predecessor.

His nomination comes after months of acting in the role while the formal appointment process was being prepared.

According to the statement, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has made contributions to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence and earned the esteem of the Bench, the Bar, and the wider legal fraternity for his intellect, impartiality, and commitment to justice.

The nomination follows constitutional requirements that mandate the President to consult with the Council of State before appointing a Chief Justice.

The Council of State will now consider the nomination before it proceeds to Parliament for approval, as required by the constitutional appointment process.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s judicial career spans multiple levels of Ghana’s court system, providing him with experience across different jurisdictions and legal matters.
