Mayor of Savannah Honours Victor Smith, Presents Him with the Key of Trust

The Mayor of Savannah, Georgia, Van R. Johnson II, has presented Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Victor Emmanuel Smith, with the Key to the City of Savannah as a symbol of trust and friendship.

The event, held on Thursday at the World Trade Centre, Savannah on Drayton Street, brought together business leaders, community stakeholders and members of the Ghanaian diaspora.

Mayor Johnson II, during the ceremony, said this tradition, originating from medieval times, poses the city’s trust in H.E. Victor Smith and his vision, which resonates with theirs, symbolising strong ties between the local government and the Ambassador.

Ambassador Smith appears to be the first Ambassador to have received this Key. Historical examples include civic and cultural figures and notable individuals such as musician Doc Cheatham.

The Programmes and Community Development Manager at the World Trade Centre Savannah, Antwone Mohammed, said the Greater Savannah Ghana Business Forum stands as a powerful platform for forging partnerships that connect local content in Ghana with global markets, strengthening economic ties and unlocking new opportunities for both sides.

He added that the team was focused on establishing strong ties and encouraged more Ghanaians in the diaspora to return home to help the country. He stressed the commitment to fostering international trade relations and strengthening engagement with Ghana and its diplomatic mission in the United States.

The highlight of the evening was remarks by Ambassador Victor Emmanuel Smith, during which he engaged guests on Ghana’s economic outlook, investment opportunities and the importance of collaboration between Ghana and international partners, particularly within the trade and investment space.
