President John Dramani Mahama has directed an expansion of Ghana’s security services recruitment drive, doubling the planned intake from 20,000 to 40,000 personnel across the country’s security agencies over a four-year period.
The directive was issued on Monday, after President Mahama convened a high-level meeting with the heads of the security agencies, the Minister for the Interior, and the Acting Minister for Defence to receive an update on the ongoing recruitment exercise.
Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed the development in an official statement signed on behalf of the Presidency.
President Mahama also used the meeting to instruct the heads of the security agencies to uphold transparency and fairness throughout the recruitment process, an emphasis the Presidency chose to place alongside the numerical expansion in its public communication.
The meeting was attended by a cross-section of Ghana’s security leadership. Among those present were the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of Prisons, the Director General of the Fire Service, the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, and the Director General of the Narcotics Control Commission.
Senior officials from the Presidency, including the Chief of Staff, the Secretary to the President, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, and the National Security Coordinator, also attended.
